How do male and female college students perceptions of civic engagement differ Essays
How do male and female college students perceptions of civic engagement differ Essays How do male and female college students perceptions of civic engagement differ Essay How do male and female college students perceptions of civic engagement differ Essay Name: Course: Lecturer: Date: How do male and female college students perceptions of civic engagement differ? Civic engagement involves working with others for the purposes of solving community problems and improving the community. It involves people working together in making a difference in the civic life of the community. People gain knowledge, and they develop the skills and values necessary to engage in different political activities and non-political activities. People participating in such activities are motivated because they consider themselves part of the society, and they relate to the problems that the society is experiencing. It involves political and civic activities. People volunteer their services for various causes, participate in different organizations, and participate in fundraising and charitable events, signing petitions, and demonstrations among other activities. College students are active in civic engagement, although they have distinct preferences in the activities they choose to engage in Male college students are more interested in political affairs. There is a higher possibility that that they will participate in political campaigns, increasing political awareness, and contributing financially in politics. On the other hand, their female counterparts have a higher possibility of participating in non-political activities. They are likely to engage in activities concerning senior citizens, children, the youth, education, and the environment. Although such differences exist, factors such as education have lessened the degree to which college students of all genders perceive civic engagement. Education and increased political activism has led to more women taking up elective political posts. This has led to a rise in the quantity of female students engaging in political activities. Differences in gender do not distinguish the level of engagement in environmental matters, as female and male students participate on the same level. They show the same level of concern for the environment. This is largely attributed to increased awareness, and the direct consequences of environmental degradation, which affects everyone within the society. The more college students are involved and concerned with the communities around them, the more they realize the problems and challenges facing these communities. This realization causes both male and female students to engage in the activities that will help improve the status in the community and help solve the problems that the members in the community are facing. Education increases the level of awareness of civic issues. College students, irrespective of their gender, are more likely to be involved in civic engagement, compared to those who did not go to college. Parental involvement also determines the level of civic engagement among college students, and it lessens the gender disparity in civic participation. The extent to which parents discuss political affairs with their children will influence their childrenââ¬â¢s perception of, and participation in politics. Female college students who discuss political affairs with their parents have a higher possibility of participation in political affairs while in college. Parental involvement increases the female college student concern about her civic duty. However, parental influence does not seem to influence the male college student on political affairs. It does not increase his civic duty concerns. Knowing the differences in perceptions among college students is beneficial for analysts, non-governmental organizations, and other civic groups. This is because it will enable them to determine who they are going to engage in their activities. Political institutions are more likely to target the male college students because of their increased interest in political affairs. Non-governmental institutions, especially those dealing with charitable and fund raising events targeting the youth and other minority groups are more likely to target the female college students.

Unobtrusive Measures in Sociology Experiments
Unobtrusive Measures in Sociology Experiments In research, an unobtrusive measure is a method of making observations without the knowledge of those being observed. Unobtrusive measures are designed to minimize a major problem in social research, which is how a subjectââ¬â¢s awareness of the research project affects behavior and distorts research results. The main drawback, however, is that there is a very limited range of information that can be gathered this way. One way to assess the effect of racial integration in schools is to compare the academic records of students educated in schools whose student populations vary in their degree of racial heterogeneity. Another way that one can determine the results of an experiment utilizing unobtrusive measures is to analyze data and behavior from a hidden camera or through a two-way mirror. In either case, privacy may come into play and a test subjects individual rights are in danger of being violated. Indirect Measures As opposed to obtrusive measures, indirect measures occur naturally during research and are available to researchers in pretty much limitless supply, depending on the researchers innovation and imagination. Indirect measures are naturally unobtrusive and are used to collect data without introducing any formal measurement procedure of which the subject is aware. Take for instance trying to measure foot traffic and item popularity in a fashion boutique. Although placing a person in the store to observe shoppers might give you great data on what people buy, it also has a chance of intruding on the study by letting the shopper know they were being watched. On the other hand, if a researcher installs hidden cameras and observes data collected from those to notice trend, the measure would be considered indirect or unobtrusive. Similarly, some cell phone apps now allow retailers to track the movement of cellular devices in the store if the customer is logged into a discount app for the store. This specific geolocation can measure exactly how long customers spend in different parts of stores, without being aware theyre being watched. This raw data is the closest one can get to understanding how a shopper spends his or her time in a store when he or she feels no one is watching.à Ethics and Surveillance Unobstructive measures come with their fair share of ethics concerns, primarily in terms of privacy and surveillance. For that reason, researchers should be careful with which methods they use and how they use them when conducting these types of sociological experiments.à By definition, indirect or unobtrusive measures collect data and observations without the experiment subjects knowledge, which could be cause for concern for this person being observed. Further, it could be a violation of the persons right to privacy by not using informed consent. In general, it is important to understand the laws governing privacy in the context of your experiment. Chances are, most will require consent from the participants, though this is not the case with certain public spaces such as museums or amusement parks, where buying a ticket acts as a contract for the patron which often times includes video surveillance and monitoring.

McHam_Donatello's David & Judith_x Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
McHam_Donatello's David & Judith_x - Assignment Example the controversial message that the familyââ¬â¢s role in Florence was the same as that of respected Old Testament autocrat slayers and saviors of the people that emblematically inverted the increasing accusations that the Medici had developed tyranny that took all the power from the republican institutions in the city (McHam 32). The sculptures were mainly used as focal points of the courtyard and the garden that were linked. David was raised on a high base at the middle of the courtyard and could be seen when the palaceââ¬â¢s main entrance was open. The exact location of the Judith and Holofernes in the plot is not known as the orchard was immediately behind the quad, it may have been noticeable from the quad if it was located on the bloc between the orchard and the quad (McHam 32). The placement of the sculptures reveals that they could easily be viewed by the desired audience since the courtyard could be accessed by palace visitors and the garden could be accessed by an invited group. 2) What evidence does McHam provide that suggests Donatelloââ¬â¢s earlier marble version of David was interpreted in political terms? How would the placement of the artistââ¬â¢s later version of David been understood? (p. 34) The inscriptions in the manuscripts which describe the Palazzo della Signoria validate the speculation that had earlier been unproven that they might have been added to the sculpture before 1416 before Danatello recut the figure to emphasize a political role for David as being the defender of Florence (McHam 34). This was done by baring his one of his legs and removing the scroll that had previously used to identify David as being a prophet. The placement of the bronze version of David in the courtyard can be understood as a self-conscious allusion to the previous marble analogue and the inscription it was associated with. It was also a sign that the Medici were closely associated to the regime and supported their principles. 3) According to the author, what was

Use of social networks for financial and performance reporting Research Paper
Use of social networks for financial and performance reporting - Research Paper Example This research analyses how the financial reporting and organizations performance have improved for the past few years because of increased use of social networking. Inescapabilty and popularity of the social network has largely created awareness and improved the relationship between the business and the stakeholders by introducing a new way in which financial information is disseminated and eventually consumed. Companies primarily use the social media to report their performances so that the information can reach larger audience who may be interested. Information that was previously released in news releases, conference calls and presentations are revealed through twitter because of its ability to swiftly and efficiently receive and share information from a trusted source. There are live tweets of companiesââ¬â¢ earning call enabling shareholders who are physically absent during call to receive live information. According to Scott (2013), ââ¬Å"Of Facebookââ¬â¢s nearly one billion strong users, approximately 200 million are mobile only.â⬠On the other hand, YouTube, and Flickr may be utilized in providing videos regarding earning calls, do presentations thus engaging investors with the business financial reports as well as sharing information such as crucial business transactions that include merger and acquisition. It is worth noting that the social network has the ability to reach even remote communities thus enabling the company to operate in distant and remote places while raising awareness about them. There are many reasons justifying the use of social media in financial reporting and performance. Social mediaââ¬â¢s ability to reach a huge audience makes it the best communication channels for businesses compared to the conventional methods that are inaccessible to some people. According to Scott (2013), ââ¬Å"Statistical research has revealed that more than 95 per cent ofà Facebook users log into their account every day. The same number

Children and Young Peopleââ¬â¢s Development Essay Example for Free
Children and Young Peopleââ¬â¢s Development Essay A child development is influenced in many ways such as their background, health and environment. These factors will have an impact on the childââ¬â¢s different areas of development. Background Children come from all different family environments, cultures and circumstances. Children go through significant family changes such as a family break-up or a new step-family. These can affect a childââ¬â¢s emotional and intellectual development. A child may also change their behaviour, which means there ability to learn is decreased. This can affect their emotional development because they may feel like it is their fault for the break up. Having a new step-family is a big change for some children, this may affect their emotional development, as they may feel as if there mother/father is replacing each other. The child may also have difficulty bonding with their new family. Some children may be deliberately hostile towards a step-parent as they may feel it is the only outlet for their feelings, and those who do not express their feelings openly may become withdrawn. This can have major effects on their intellectual development, as they may become withdrawn at school and unable to concentrate on learning. Read more: Explain how children and young peoples development is influenced by a range of personal factors essay Coming from a low income family may have a significant effect on a childââ¬â¢s development. Burnham and Baker state ââ¬ËStatistic show that children who come from deprived backgrounds are less likely to thrive and achieve well in schoolââ¬â¢. Coming from a low income family may affect a childââ¬â¢s intellectual development, as the family may not be able to afford to pay for extra activities such as swimming lessons or dance lessons. This could also have an impact on the childââ¬â¢s physical development. This may affect the way a child is able to respond in certain situations. There communicational development may be affected as they may not have interacted with children their own age before. Cultural differences may also impact a child development, as they may feel isolated at school. This would affect there communication and intellectual development, as they may be unable to communicate with other children. They my also feel excluded because they are brought up different, this can affect their emotional development. Not interacting with other peers can have a large impact on different types of development, such as emotional as they can feel isolated and excluded. Childrens with different cultural beliefs or practice may cause emotional conflict. Such as if they want to participate in an activity which goes against their families wishes or religious beliefs, they would feel excluded. Other issues would be if the child has moved countries their intellectual development may be affected due to the fact that they have to ââ¬Ëcatch upââ¬â¢ with new languages and cultures. Health If a child suffers from poor health or impairment, this may have an effect on their development. If a child suffers from a medical condition this may lessen their ability to participate in activities than other children. This will affect their physical development, as well as their emotional development. Depending how aware the child is about their needs, they may feel excluded and isolated from other children. Other health factors maybe that the child was born premature, as they are more likely to develop slower than a healthy born child. There may be an effect on their physical development, as they are a smaller and behind on developing. This may also have an in pact on their intellectual development, as it has been shown that premature babies struggle with maths. Burdo-Hartman says. Memorizing math facts in particular has been shown to be difficult for some preemies, Environment A childs environment, for example, family or school, plays a huge part in their development. A family that abuses or neglects a child will damage the childââ¬â¢s natural development. The indifferent family style has a negative effect on the child. The child may not have much opportunity, they may just watch television or play video games all day, will not gain the experiences and interactions needed to further their development. Where a child lives is an important factor for their development. If they live in poor areas, there are less services and opportunities. This can have a negative effect on their intellectual development as they are not able to access services such as playgroups or afterschool clubs. On the other hand, wealthy areas are more likely to have better services and opportunities, this means that a childââ¬â¢s development may not be affected. Burnham, L. Baker, B. (2010). A comparative study of the ways in which Richard Cameron and Thomas :: English Literature
A comparative study of the ways in which Richard Cameron and Thomas Hardy apportion justice and sympathy towards the male characters. In 'Can't stand up for falling down' Cameron is looking at the boundaries of drama and braking them, most of the play consists of monologues, we are told of events by the female characters rather then, as is traditional in theatre, being shown them. Cameron uses this to form an intimacy between the audience and the female characters, allowing the audience to empathise with them, justify their actions and isolate the male characters. In contrast to this Hardy, in the novel, uses his authorial voice to try and manipulate the reader's sympathies and sense of justice whereas Cameron, although he tries to guide the audience, ultimately leaves them to decide upon their own opinions. The way the writers describe their characters form the basis of how they are perceived and influences whether the readers and audience want to bring them to justice or sympathise with them. Thomas Hardy is a very dramatic writer and conjures up scenes in the mind's eye of his readers. In the novel 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' Hardy describes Alec and Angel's physical and personal characteristics making them more rounded characters and allowing the reader the ability to form complex emotions about them such as sympathy. Hardy uses the over spiritualised Angel to personify the average 'new' 1890's man. He rejects Christianity and embraces logic rather then the sensual. He therefore falls prey to his emotions. He sees Tess as a thing of beauty and idealises her, portraying in his mind and convincing himself that she is a perfect goddess; therefore he does not love her for who she really is. Angel's character is presented as being gentle with Tess and interested in her thoughts rather then just her looks, which is in direct contrast to Alec. All we had heard about Tess previously from the other characters in the novel is that "her fortune is in her face." but Tess wants to be accepted for herself and Angel encourages her without pushing her. "You sir can raise up dreams with your music and drive all such horrid fancies away." Hardy shows this as Tess's belief about Angel as her saviour. This description is in direct comparison to Hardy's original description of it as "dim and flattened" showing that whilst Tess is easily pleased by Angel, Hardy is not so; this encourages the readers into Hardy's own view. In 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' Alec is presented as a moustache-curling, melodramatic, cardboard-cut-out villain. Hardy uses him to represent both the unjust differences between the treatment of women and stereotyping of women in what was perceived to be an new

Islamic Art in Europe Essay
Islamic art and architecture is worldly renowned. It was developed during the era when the West was surrounded in Dark. It was the time when the West was learning to live in a society while the Islamic world was enjoying their glorious time. They had mastered the language of social survival and aesthetic beauty. They had excellence in the field of science and arts especially chemistry, physics, mathematics, and astronomy, painting, sculpturing wood carving and calligraphic art, the dominant feature of Islamic art. The sea route of Mediterranean Sea spread the Islamic art and knowledge in the world of West. The elites would visit the land of Muslims so as to gain knowledge from Muslim and Jewish scholars and brought with them the memories of Islamic art. Later, this art was exported to the West and was the sign of status. This art brought the glory of Muslim into another world and created patrons of Muslim art. When the Muslim glory was declining, the art did not lose its significance in the world and many Muslim artisans and Jewish craftsmen were employed by the Christians to build extravagant and highly admired buildings. (Derhak, 1) The roots of European culture can be traced back to the time of Renaissance that brought a glorious time to the field of arts, science commerce and architecture. But long before this Spain was well developed in the humanistic and aesthetic beauty ingrained in the society which was at that time under the rule of Muslims. At the time when Europe a feudal society and all the powers were held by the Church, the Spain was booming and flourishing with half a million of population living in 113,000 houses and 700 mosques. The houses were properly built catering the needs of the people as they provided marble balconies to serve people in summer and hot-air ducts built under mosaic tiles to prevent people from cold and winter. There were gardens with artificial fountains and orchards in every house. The streets were paved and properly constructed. There were seventy libraries in Cordova, capital of Muslim Empire while Europe was unknown to the material, paper. (Derhak, 1) Students from around the world came here to learn philosophy, science and medicine. The society was tolerant to other faiths and religions which prospered the growth of art and architecture. But after some years, the period of intellectual and economic success began to decline and new Arabic dynasty was formed. Conservative in its nature, the new dynasty could not bring the glory to the Cordova society. At that time the Western society was growing and the Europeans were forming a lobby to drive the Muslims out of Spain. They set a system of translating the work of Muslims which had the philosophies of Greeks and Romans. ââ¬Å"They translated astrology, astronomy, pharmacology, psychology, physiology, zoology, botany, mineralogy, optics, chemistry, mathematics, physics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, music, meteorology, geography, mechanics, hydrostatic navigation and historyâ⬠. Europeans learned a lot through the text of Moors. Along these texts, the Arabic music was spread teaching the use of flute, keyboard and harmony. (Derhak, 1) The values and ideas taught by Islamic culture were called the secular humanism as it drove the people away from the powerful grip of Roman Catholic Church and these studies were having the progress of human nature as the centre of interest. The rise of humanism was seen in the paintings created by Renaissance artists. In the middle Ages, saints were the centre of drawings and they were portrayed as the humans larger than ordinary life. The landscapes in those painting were heaven but the renaissance art transformed and saints were depicted of the size of common man and earth became the landscape of the paintings. Now the saints occupied similar to the common man. The renaissance art gave new tools to the artist to portray three-dimensional picture giving a new effect of illusions in paintings. The frame of the paintings was becoming more the frame of the window and the painting was the view of the place seen beyond the window. (AAMââ¬âThe Renaissance Connection Lesson Plans Humanism in the Renaissance, 1) It gave the artists the idea of using oil paints and egg tempera in their paintings. These paints gave depth and roughness to the painting which gave a life to the paintings. The glass and ceramics which became the identity of European courts for three hundred years was brought by Muslims in Spain. The skilled technique used to make glassware more ornamental was practiced by Muslim glassmakers in 800 AD. These techniques include gliding, enameling and tin-glaze and luster on glass. ââ¬Å"Italy was at the heart of sea routes in late Middle Ages and was surrounded by Muslim Empires of Turkey, Palestine, North Africa and Spainâ⬠. This link helped in mixing the cultures of East and West. Sea routes brought exposure to various forms of art and techniques. It introduced glassblowing in west practiced by east and learnt from Syrians of Roman Empire. This also diffused textiles, metal work, carpets and ivories, popularizing the motifs and styles of Islamic world in the West. (AAMââ¬âThe Renaissance Connection Lesson Plans Humanism in the Renaissance, 1) The international luxury trade from 14th-17th century brought in a great impact on Italian art and architecture as it was heavily influenced by the items imported to European market from the Islamic east. The Italians adapted and imitated the imported Oriental art. The Italians have little knowledge of the geographical distinction of the foreign items that they admired. The paintings that revolutionized the Italian culture gave rise to the trade and travel across the Mediterranean Sea. Ceramics that were regarded as mediocre in Islamic society were admired by the Italian society and had great impact on the pottery of Italy. (The Islamic Influence On The Italian Renaissance Is Explored In Exhibition Tracing The Roots Of Luxury Glass And Ceramics, 1) The Cathedral built near Pisa at the end of 20th century has Islamic earthenware bowls called bacini are basically painted with the traditional Islamic animals, plants and geometric motifs. These bacini were also used as kitchenware demonstrating the diffusion of Islamic utensils in late middle Ages. It is thought that these utensils were brought in by Crusaders or donated by the travelers to local institutions or building projects. Bacini caused improvement in Italian pottery. The largest surviving Islamic bronze sculpture was brought in during the conquest of the Muslim Empires on Mediterranean shores. The Lion of Venice, another bronze rendition came from the eastern shores of Mediterranean Sea and was placed at the entrance of the Piazza San Marco in Venice. (The Islamic Influence On The Italian Renaissance Is Explored In Exhibition Tracing The Roots Of Luxury Glass And Ceramics, 1) The Abbasids Caliph in Baghdad developed a rich urban culture giving high value to pleasure and luxury in every dayââ¬â¢s life. They developed silk weaving, ceramics, metalwork and wood carving in daily utensils turning them into the work of art. The tapestries, cushions and rugs were woven in silk. Clothing became rich and elegant and the daily utensils were given visual and demonstrative qualities adding the fun to use them. These items were heavily imported even among the Muslim Empire from Spain to China. Later they were exported to the European society when the wealth started flowing in their life. The items of decorations were also heavily imported which had no offending material to the Christian community as idolatry is not permissible in Islam. Most of the Islamic art were abstracts in which the sole or the dominant theme was religious. (Bent, 1) The human figures drawn or sculptured in Islamic world consisted of humans engaged in pleasure of drinking, horse riding and hunting which was also with correspondence of the feudal society of Europe. The jars known as albarelli was commonly used in Islamic society to preserve spices was aesthetically beautiful and showed style in its use. The ivy and fern leaves painted in horizontal bands in cobalt blue and gold metallic luster highly complemented the shape of the jar. The Italian Renaissance and Islamic art both emphasizes in the harmony of design, balance of parts and perfection of the whole body of the item. (Bent, 1) The main difference between Renaissance art and Islamic art was that European art was the representation of Greco-Roman traditions while Islamic art was ornamental. The depiction of plants was strikingly similar to the nature as they grow and behave. The borders or the frames carry most of the meaning of the drawing. The art influenced by the oriental imports focuses on pleasing the senses and enhanced the object. These art pieces lost their religious meaning of Islamic culture as the seculars or Christians employed the artists who were highly regarded for their craft. For example the basins which were used for washing hands before meals or prayers in the east Islamic Empire lost its meaning and were used as the containers of wines of Eucharist. Even the garments also lost their original identity. The silk garments which had woven Arabic inscriptions on them praising the Mamluk Sultan worn by the princes according to their statuses and adherence also lost their original representation and were worn by the clergy of Roman Catholic Church. (Bent, 1) The most important room of Italian courts, the bedchambers were highly decorated with the tapestries, in which Arabic inscription were woven, and expensive carpets, originally traded from the Muslim market or are the original depiction of Muslim art. The silk gowns which were presented to Muslim rulers for their statuses were then presented to European kings as diplomatic gift. The use of silk became so much prevalent in European society that later the princes were buried after being wrapped in Ornamental silk. Most of the silk was consumed by the Church as it was used as drapes on altars walls and funeral biers. (Bent, 1) The vessels made up of rock crystals, glass and ceramics acquired a sacred status as they became the containers of relics. The use of precious metals gems also started prevailing in European society and started defining the statuses of the people. The bourgeoisie proudly showed off the pieces acquired from the Italian culture. The use of such materials prominently defined the difference of statuses among the rich and powerful. The cost, rarity technique and the eastern origins made the goods more appealing to the European society. Sometimes the richest Europeans had difficulty in collecting luxury item in quantity like the Islamic carpets and Chinese porcelain. (Mack, 1) The Italians tried to establish local markets of such items but they failed to produce the quality and the design similar to the original item but some imported item became so popular that exceptional efforts were made to create an imitation of those goods which was quite similar to the original one. The imitation was so similar that it was difficult to distinguish the original piece from the mimic intricate indicating the sophisticated appreciation of Islamic art. The foreign art highly contributed in the development of the Italian art as these patrons and artisan were always in thrust of exploring and developing new techniques in art to give it a more luxurious touch. (Mack, 2) The script of the movement of Oriental art written by Italians have little value as at that time they had little knowledge about the geographical origins and foreign artistic styles and little has been written by Muslim authors. It is believed that cross-culture has occurred when a native artist migrated to another land and trains the patrons of the other society. Another way of cross-cultural development was due to the sketches or memories of patron or the traveler who had highly admired the art and culture and other societies and brought it to his land. (Mack, 3) The early transference of Muslim culture showed its early traces in Venice when a state chapel and a shrine was being built for the saint relics. A Byzantine architect and a Greek craftsman worked on its structure and earlier designs of mosaic decoration. These Gothic last of Italian art had its roots back to Islamic culture. It has its historical analogies with styles of Pisa and Norman Sicily. This form of art soon appeared in the state buildings giving great credit and honor to the Christian as they defeated the Muslim and drove them out of Mediterranean shores. Soon the Christian had full control on the goods let by Muslims as war booty and was used for commercial advantage. The Pisans and Normans styles quickly grew but were highly affected by the architecture of Mediterranean but significantly expressed the shift of powers. The conquest in west Mediterranean shores also created extensive trade across the sea routes. The variety of color and texture in the cathedralââ¬â¢s exterior ornaments bring to mind the great Islamic art of Spain and North Africa. High influence of Islamic art was depicted on the governmental and religious buildings especially in Norman Sicily and Pisa as they hired the Muslims and the Greek inhabiting the shores of Mediterranean. (Mack, 4) The geometric marble traceries screening windows in lunette above the Porta Santââ¬â¢ Alippio at the extreme left of the facade is quite similar to the window grill of Great Mosque in Damascus. The striking similarities between the Islamic and Christian buildings created confusion among the travelers and they started considering the Dome of Rock as the temple of Solomon and Herod. Another example of such confusions is Al-Aqsa mosque considered as the palace of Solomon. (Mack, 5) The domes were highly regarded in Islamic building especially mosques. The trend on the domes in mosques can be traced back to the early time of Islamic civilization. The most original form is muqarnas dome or semi dome. It is truly Islamic creation and was not influenced by any other culture or civilization. They could be made of wood, stucco, brick or stone and are the most characteristic feature of Muslim world. These were later adopted by the Christian in their religious building especially that of Pisa. (Grabar, 1) The varied Oriental culture in Venice showed the growing trade relations with the eastern Mediterranean. The Gothic architectural style highly expressed the values and culture of the ruling class and also developed a distinctive dialect which had any words of Arabic language and this dialect survived in the palaces till sixteen century- showing the high influence of Islamic society in Venice. (Mack, 6) Later in the 14th century the theme of Italian paintings changed and they showed the arrival of luxury items from Islamic society and their use by the Italian people. The paintings, drawings and sculptures portrayed the understanding of cultures of East and West but these understanding were based on the imports of goods, religious and political strategies with each other. (Mack, 7) The fascination for Islamic art was beyond the bounds of Islamic world. The development of blue and white on ceramics in Islamic art was desirable to Chinese as well as Europe. It was highly bought by these societies for decorative purpose. (Bent, 1) The Quranic scripts written on mosques developed calligraphy in Islamic art. This decoration was applied to various buildings of religion, military civic and private use. it was the main feature and identity of Islamic art. The earliest surviving building of calligraphic art is Dome of Rock in Jerusalem. The inscription on buildings used to show the praise to God, construction date and patronage scripts on the religious buildings while the civic buildings had date of construction, details of the architects and artisan but most prominently it had reference inscriptions of the caliph to demonstrate his power and benevolence. Variety of calligraphic art was developed for aesthetic beauty. It was applied on many surfaces like wood, stone, plaster and ceramic tiles. Later it was developed on books, coins and metal wares. This form of art highly attracted the west due to its origin and writing pattern. They were usually used for decorative purpose. The crockery having calligraphic art was highly regarded for their classy use and was mainly consumed by elites. Marxist Critiques of Capitalism Theory of Surplus Value
Marxist Critiques of Capitalism Theory of Surplus Value Introduction Marxist critiques of capitalism challenge each other in many aspects. However, the three critiques are interrelated.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Marxist Critiques of Capitalism: Theory of Surplus Value specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Theory of surplus value This theory states that surplus value is a factor of surplus production. This theory also encompasses labor. Thus, capitalism exploits the common work force. The surplus production is constantly being created. In fact, workers are willing to put extra effort in performing their daily tasks. This benefits the owner and stakeholders of the organization. In this process, a modern slavery regime is continuously created. The comparison of the two brings out the idea of work being done at no cost. This results in extra products that create the surplus value. This is a sign of extra revenue to the owner. This theory contradicts the common ideology of fa ir exchange between the capitalists and the work force. This ideology encompasses fairness and justice in conducting business. This is against the ideology that people will receive wages according to their level performance. This theory offers the best definition of profit. Theory of value This theory states that price is a dependent variable and value is an independent variable. The theory also considers price as the best aspect that can be used to value a commodity.Advertising Looking for essay on political sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This theoryââ¬â¢s principle is based on the theory of supply and demand. It creates an atmosphere that will clearly mimic a pure capitalistic situation. To demonstrate this theory, it is essential to use figures to quantify the actual change created by the situation. A perfect example of this is the assumption that a working day has six hours. Further, there is an ass umption of the value of production that a worker will create by the end of the day. This will encompass all the activities that are done in one day. In this case, $ 1000.00 will be the value of the production. If the working hours are inflated from 6 hours to 12 hours, the value of production doubles to $ 2000.00. In this example, surplus labor produces twice as much as the initial production value. This situation creates a new equation that relates the working hours to the new value of price. N = M * L Therefore, N is the new value of price. M is the new product production of a worker in one hour and L is the labor hours for one worker in one day. Commodity fetishism This theory states that human beings embrace the trends in the market. For instance, they seek to buy or receive wages that prevail in the market. Here, the market creates the relationship between value and price of a good or service.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Marxist Critiques of Capita lism: Theory of Surplus Value specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This is the price of labor and basic goods for human advancement. This behavior turns the people into commodities and governs the way human beings relate to one another in the society. An individuals self-value is what he or she is worth. This can also be the amount of monetary compensation payable to the individual for his or her strength or expertise. Thus, job seekers or house buyers tend to rely on the current market situation as the basis for market prices for houses or wages. Conclusion This situation makes the people victims of the market and not its benefactors. They have no control over the prices in the environment. Prices are determined by the situation that is created by the forces of the economy.

The National Youth Leadership Forum Should You Go
The National Youth Leadership Forum Should You Go SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Have you heard of the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF)? Perhaps youââ¬â¢ve heard that attending the NYLF is a great way to improve your chances of getting into top colleges, and youââ¬â¢re wondering if thatââ¬â¢s true or not.Spoiler: If you're considering NYLF because you think it's prestigious, you'd be dead wrong. Keep reading to find out why. This guide will explain what NYLF is, what its benefits and drawbacks are, and how you can decide whether or not you should participate in it. What Is the National Youth Leadership Forum? The National Youth Leadership Forum is a groupof summer programs designed to introduce select high school students to different careers and help prepare them for college and future jobs. NYLF is owned by Envision EMI, a for-profit company that creates and runs numerous other youth leadership programs, such as Lead America, the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, and the National Young Scholars Program. A program similar to NYLF is theNational Student Leadership Conference (NSLC). Like the National Youth Leadership Forum, NSLCruns programs for high school students that are focused on specificcareer fields, but NSLC has more of a focus on developing leadership skills. During NYLF, students live in college dorms at different campuses across the country such as Harvard, Stanford, and NYU. Studentsattend lectures and events on campus or nearby during field trips.NYLF marketstheir programs as a way to givestudents the knowledge and experience they need to succeed in college and their future careers. The National Youth Leadership Forumoffers seven programs for high school students in six career fields: medicine, national security, law CSI, business, engineering, and media. I've briefly described each of them below. NYLF Medicine NYLFmedicine programs are nine days long. They include lectures and meetings with prominent doctors, visits to amedical school campus, hands-on practice with diagnostic tools, and lecturesonhealth carecareers. NYLF Advanced Medicine Health Care NYLFadvanved medicine programs are ten days long. They cover the same information as regular NYLF Medicine programs but are a day longer and only take place at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. NYLF National Security NYLF programs in national security are six days long and help prepare participants for careers in defense, intelligence, and the diplomatic corps. Participants meet with members of the military and federal agencies, visit places such as the Pentagon and U.S. Naval Academy, and learn how to employ a crisis decision-making process. NYLF Law and CSI Programs are six days long and teach students about careers in legal and forensic science fields. Participants hear lectures from prominent lawyers and members of the FBI, visit a courthouse or laboratory and interact with professionals, and take part in a Supreme Court Simulation where they learn about the judicial process and how to argue effectively. NYLF Business Innovation NYLF Business Innovation programs last six days and are designed to teach participants about careers in the business world. Students take part in business workshops and compete in a corporate simulation. NYLF Engineering and Technology These programs last eight days and focus on multiple engineering fields, such as sustainable design, robotics, and web design. Students in this program develop their own digital model and learn about innovative engineering technology. NYLF Media: Advertising, Film, and Journalism During this eight day program, students are introduced to different careers that relate to digital media. Participants produce a digital newspaper or magazine and learn about digital-age reporting. How Do You Apply to NYLF? The first step to applying for an NYLF program is to be nominated ornominate yourself. You may have heard of NYLF because you werenominated as a potential candidate for the program. You can be nominated by a teacher, leader from a youth organization, counselor, or through certain talent development programs. Being nominated only means someone thought you might be a good fit for the program, but it doesn't get you special privileges, and it isn't required to attend NYLF. Ifyou havenââ¬â¢t been nominated, you can still nominate yourself and applyfor the program you are interested in on NYLFââ¬â¢s website. Applying only requires submitting some basic information about yourself and your school. Once you have entered that information you are able to reserve a spotand put down a deposit for the program of your choice. After you enroll, you will receive a confirmation e-mail that will direct you to a website withall the information you need to participate in an NYLF program, such as program updates, pre-conference assignments, and a travel checklist. How Competitive Is NYLF? The National Youth Leadership Forum markets itself as a program exclusivelyfor top students. However, there areno admission criteria for NYLF.Anyone who is currently a high school student can register for and attend an NYLF program. You don't need to have a certain GPA, extracurriculars, or leadership experience. NYLF emphasizes the fact that students must be nominated as a way to show its "competitiveness."However, these nominations are sent to thousands of students eachyear, often regardless of their academic abilities, as a way forNYLF's parent company, Envision, to increase the number of students participating in and paying for its programs. Additionally, being nominated is not required to attend NYLF. Any high school student can nominate himself or herselfand automatically be eligible to enroll inan NYLF program. Despite NYLF's claim to be a prestigiousorganization that only selects top students and leaders, the reality is that the program is open to all high school studentsas long as they arewilling to pay the required costs. NYLF programs can have benefits, which I discuss in more detail in the following sections, but it's important for students and their parents to know that neither being nominated for NYLFnor attending one of itsprograms provesany academic or leadership skills on the part of the student. What Are the Benefits of Participating in NYLF? There can definitely be benefits to attend an NYLF program, and I've listed some of the most important of them below. Benefit 1: Learn About Particular Careers One major benefit of attending an NYLF program is that you can choose a program in the field you want to work in, such as medicine, law, or diplomacy, and gain hands-on experience in that field. For example, if you participate in the NYLF Medicine program, you will observe and speak to doctors, learn about new medical technology, and participate in medical simulations, similar to what actual med students do.These experiences can help you gain skills you can use later on in college and your career, and they give you a taste for what a future career in that field might be like. You may find that you actually donââ¬â¢t like medicine as much as you thought you wouldbut insteaddiscovered another career field that you find really interesting. Itââ¬â¢s much better to learn this nowthan halfway through college because switching your major can sometimes delay graduation. Benefit 2: Form New Relationships Each NYLF program includes lectures by industry professionals. These guest lecturers, who are often leaders in their field, speak with students about their career path and the industry in general.Hearing lectures from people in a specific career fieldgives program participants the opportunity to learn more about what a certain career is like and have their questions answered by someone who has a lot of relevant experience. Students also often form personal relationships at NYLFprograms. After spending several days together, many participants return home with new friends who are often interested in the same careers as they are. After the program ends, these friends can provide advice when you are looking at different colleges, majors, and jobs. Benefit 3: Experience College Life Participating in an NYLF program can also introduce you to college and the collegiate life. All NYLF conferences take place on college campuses, with students housed in college dorms. Participating in a program where you live on campus can be very helpful for students who may not know much about college and want to see what it will be like while still in high school. There is also the option of receiving up to two college credits from your NYLF experience. However, students interested in earning college credit should be aware that the credits are pass/fail, they come with an extra fee, and not all colleges will accept credits earned at an NYLF program. What Are the Drawbacks of Participating in NYLF? Despite the benefits of NYLF, they are often not the best investment. I've listed some of the major drawbacks of these programs below. Drawback 1: Programs Are Often Short All NYLF programs are betweensix and ten days long. While this may be long enough to introduce you to a subject and give you some hands-on experience, itââ¬â¢s very difficult to gain much in-depth knowledge in such a short time. Students looking for thorough and detailed knowledge of a particular job or career field will likely not be able to gain the amount of information theyââ¬â¢d want from an NYLF program. The short program length can also make it difficult to cultivate strong relationships with both program mentors and other participants. Drawback 2: Costs Despite their short length, NYLF programs have high price tags.Including required program fees,an NYLF program costsroughly between $3000 and $4000 to attend, depending on the program chosen. This program fee includes two meals a day, housing, transportation during the program, and materials. It does not include lunch, transportation to and from the program site, and college credit fees.Paying several thousand dollars for a short program can be difficult for many high schoolstudentsand their families.NYLF does offer some scholarships and tips for fundraising to help offset costs; however, students should expect to pay the entire program fee. It's possible to have the same or similar experiences to those of an NYLF program for a fraction of the cost. This option is discussed in more detail in the following section. Drawback 3:Not as Exclusive as Marketed The National Youth Leadership Forummarkets itself as a competitive program that only invites and accepts top-notch students. However, Envision, the company that runs NYLF and many similar programs, is a for-profit company.Their goal is to maximize profits, so they want as many students to enroll in their programs as possible. In 2009, Envision hosted Presidential Youth Inaugural Conferences that claimed to offer students the opportunity to attend exclusive events in Washington D.C. Over 15,000 students paid to attend this event, and many were surprised at the number of participants and felt that Envision wasnââ¬â¢t prepared to handle such a large number of students. Many also felt that Envisiondidnââ¬â¢t provide access to all the events they promised students would be able to attend. Numerousstudents and parents filed complaints, and Envision ended up settling a lawsuit and promised to pay up to $17 million in vouchers to attendees of the conference. While NYLF emphasizes the fact that students are ââ¬Å"invitedâ⬠to attend, any student can apply to NYLFwithout receiving an invitation. In fact, there is no longer any GPA, leadership or academic achievement requirement needed to attend. Any current high school student who can afford the program fee can attend an NYLF program, making it not competitive or prestigious at all. Participating in NYLF is not as prestigious as they want you to think it is. Should You Participate in NYLF? So how useful isNYLF? The short answer is that it depends on why youââ¬â¢re interested in attending. Some people find NYLF programs fun and useful while others see them as expensive resume padding. There are good reasons for participating in the NYLF and reasons that are not as strong. Think carefully about why you are interested in attending and read on to help make your decision. Good Reasons to Attend an NYLF Program You want to learn more about a specific career field. You want to meet students with similar interests. You want to prepare for college. An NYLF program can be a good way to learn about a specific career and gain hands-on experience in it. Attending an NYLF program also gives you an opportunity to meet other students who are interested in the same career field. Sometimes these connections can become lasting friendships. Also, if you are curious or a bit apprehensive about college and want to experience things like living in a dorm and eating in a dining hall, you can do this at an NYLF program. If you are able to afford an NYLF program and one or more of the above reasons interest you, then you may want to consider looking more seriously into enrolling. However, be aware that NYLF programs are not the only way to achieve any of the above goals. If you are unable to attend an NYLF program, there are numerous other ways to have similar experiences. Students who want to learn more about a specific career can do an internship or job shadow, those who want to meet students with similar interests can join a club or volunteer, and those who want to experience college can visit a school they are interested in. Many colleges offer overnight stays in the dorms to students who are thinking aboutattending that school. Weak Reasons for Attendingan NYLF Program While there are certainly strong reasons to participate in an NYLF program, there are also reasons that you should not use to justify attending. I've discussed severalof these weak reasons below, and, for each reason, I've given analternative solutionthat you may want to consider insteadof an NYLF program. Weak Reason 1: You Think It Will Impress Colleges The truth is that having an NYLF program on your resume or college application is not any more impressive than other extracurricular activities, such as participating in the school tennis team or math club. In fact, it may even appear less impressive because you had to pay to participate and weren't accepted based on any skills or knowledge you had. Colleges donââ¬â¢t need to see that you participated in the NYLF in order to decide whether you are smart or a potential leader; they can discern those things just by looking at your grades and extracurricular activities. This is especially true since there are no requirements to participate in NYLF other than being a high school student and being able to afford the program fee. Alternative Idea: Gain expertise and leadership experience through your extracurriculars. If you are looking to increase your chances of getting into college by having strong extracurriculars, choose activities that relate to your interests and allow you to obtain leadership positions. Sticking with an extracurricular, no matter what it is, and acquiring more responsibility is more impressive than a short-term NYLF program because it gives schools a better idea ofyour interests and abilities. If you need help deciding on what activities to do, we have a list of hundreds of extracurriculars for you to browse! Weak Reason 2: You Want an In-Depth Look at a Certain Career While NYLF programs can teach you more about a particularcareer and give you the opportunity to hear lectures and participate in hands-on activities that relate to it, the programs are simply too short to provide thorough knowledge of a certaincareer. Alternative Idea:If you are really looking for a way get comprehensive knowledge on a career, consider doing an internship.Internships are generally several weeks to several months long, and doing onewill give you much more time to learn whata particular job is really like day-to-day. Weak Reason 3: You Want to Network With Professionals The web pagefor each NYLF program contains a list of prestigious guest speakers who have given lectures to previous program participants. While these guest lecturers are often leaders in their field and very knowledgeable, you shouldnââ¬â¢t sign up for an NYLF program thinking it will give you the opportunity to network with them and potentially get an internship or job. Most of the guest lecturers simply give their presentation and answer questions afterward, with pretty much no opportunity for students to speak with them one-on-one. Alternative Idea:If you are interested in getting to know professionals in a certain career field personally, consider an internship orjob shadow. Both of these options offer more opportunities for getting to know current workers, and by working directly with them or observing them, you will be more memorable than if you were simply sitting in the audience. Thiswill make those professionalsmore likely to remember you in the future and possibly recommend you for future jobs. Weak Reason 4: You Want to Earn College Credit While it is possible to earn college credit during an NYLF program, this should not be a primary reason for you to enroll.Through the NYLF, students can earn two pass/fail college credits if they pay an extra fee of several hundred dollars. Most college classes are three credits, so receiving credit for the equivalent of less than one class will not help you graduate college any sooner or give you much of a head start.Additionally, many colleges do not accept these credits because they didnââ¬â¢t take place in a classroom environment and were earned over a short period of time. Alternative Idea:Take classes at your local community college or a nearby university. You can also concentrate on AP/IB classes. If you are interested in earning college credit, you can often earn more credits for much less money by passing AP or IB exams (which many colleges accept as college credit) or by taking classes at a community college. Summary In short, the National Student Leadership Forumcan provide useful and interesting opportunities for high school students, but it isnot better or more impressive than other extracurriculars. While NYLF programs can give participants the opportunity to learn more about certain careers, meet new and interesting people, and experience collegiate life, there are multiple other ways for students to achieve each of these experiences, such as by joining a school club or doing an internship. NYLF programs cost several thousand dollars and this high price tag, along with the fact that the programs last only a few days, shoulddeter people who are interested in gaining in-depth knowledge or developing close relationships.Although NYLF claims to be prestigious and competitive, any high school student can enroll in one of itsprograms, and colleges do not find participating in it to be any more impressive than a normal summer camp or extracurricular. If you can afford it and think that an NYLF program would be useful to you, then consider attending one; many past participants have spoken positively about their experience. However, if you cannot or would rather not participate, donââ¬â¢t worry about it hurting your chances of getting into college or finding a job. There are plenty of ways to get the same benefits that NYLF offers that are likely closer to home and much less expensive. CAPM Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 3
CAPM - Assignment Example An investment of risky investment calls for compensation of the respective investor for the time and money devoted to the investment. Typically, the time value of money is symbolized by risk free (rf) in the formula. This is meant to reimburse an investor for investing money for some period of time. On the other hand, the risk measures the amount of reparation that is needed by an investor for taking an additional risk. It is computed by taking the beta that measures the return of the asset in the market over a period and market premium. Other assumptions of the model are: there is perfect competition in the market and, therefore, an individual cannot affect any price of an asset by selling or buying. All the investors have the same information regarding the availability of the securities prices and their respective risks involved. All investors in the market have an idea of making decisions based on variances and expected returns of the portfolios they desire to invest. It should be noted that beta indeed measures the amount of risk that is involved in investing in a particular stock in relation to the market risk. For example, if the market beta is 1 and an investorââ¬â¢s security has a beta of 2, it would be riskier than an investorââ¬â¢s security of 0.25. The theory postulate that expected return of a portfolio is equal to risk free security plus a risk premium then multiplied by systematic risk of the asset. Ra = rf + Beta (rm ââ¬ârf). For example in the market, the risk free rate =4%, the beta of the stock = 2 and market return is 12% over time, the expected return of the stock will be 4%+2(12%-4%) =20%. The beta, therefore, provides an answer to the risk return relationship. CAPM model provides a vital account for pricing the debt and equity. This is because it takes into consideration factors like risk free rate that is
